As a leader, you have to be able to give AND receive tough feedback. A few weeks ago, it was my turn to receive some TOUGH feedback. As many of you know, I launched my first public leadership challenge two weeks ago. After months of planning and preparing, I was really excited to share this idea with the world. More importantly, I wanted to share it with people I knew would see its value. The only problem was, very few people responded to it. People loved the concept, but something was still off-putting about it. So, I went to a trusted mentor and partner to get feedback. What he said next crushed me... He said, "The content looks good, but the name sucks." OUCH! Like most tough feedback, it wasn't what he said to me that hurt the most. It was the realization that he was right. While The Make People Better Challenge name has great intentions behind it, it's not very clear, and it speaks against something I believe in so strongly. You can't MAKE people better. You can try, but they have to be a willing participant in their own growth journey. How did I miss something as simple as that? Also, the name didn't speak to what I wanted participants of the challenge to walk away with. I want every participant in the challenge to walk away feeling like a more effective leader. Feeling less overwhelmed and more in control over what they are tasked with. With that being the goal, I needed to walk away from the name that I spent money, time, and resources to create and start new. So, I'm happy to (re)introduce my first public leadership challenge, the Increase Your Leadership Effectiveness Challenge. During this (newly named) 3-day virtual challenge, you will learn the 3 key principles of Leadership Effectiveness and the 8 core skills you need to master to increase your leadership effectiveness. I hope to see you all there on November 18th - 20th. We'll talk more soon. Cheers to great feedback and growth! PS What do you think about the new name??? Reply to this email with your feedback! |

Hey Reader, Yesterday I had the privilege of hosting a training session with nonprofit leaders from all over the state of Indiana at the United Way. One thing that stood out to me was this: every leader in the room was crystal clear on their mission and WHY their work matters. That clarity showed up in the way they spoke about their organizations, the passion in their voices, and the energy they brought to the session. It made me think — in the for-profit world, leaders often get caught in...
Hi Reader, It’s been a while since I’ve hit your inbox, and I wanted to reconnect. Over the past year I’ve coached several leaders who are smart, capable, and hardworking — yet feel buried in emails, stuck in back-to-back meetings, and constantly putting out fires. They’re working harder than ever but still feel behind. For some, it’s even followed them home with their family and friends noticing the stress. I know this feeling all too well. I remember being this leader. I’d show up two hours...
Hey Reader, I hope you are starting to lean into the holiday season, especially this season of gratitude. Yesterday, I was visiting my dentist (not my favorite place in the world), and while I was in a little pain and a lot of discomfort, I suddenly became overwhelmed with gratitude. Although I could think of at least a hundred other places I'd rather be than at the dentist, I was still happy to be there. Okay, maybe not "happy," but I was definitely content. While sitting in the dentist's...
